BattlePawn is a game engine specifically built for running conversions of boardgames although it can in theory handle many other genres. Games that are part of the BattlePawn system can be downloaded with ease through an integrated installer that doesn't require restarting the application. Patching and other kinds of maintenance is done as smoothly and painlessly as possible when you log in, without requiring user input.

Development of BattlePawn was started in 2005 by Board Games Online, a small Norwegian game developer. The application's launch title is "Descent - Journeys in the Dark", a conversion of the bestselling boardgame by Fantasy Flight Games. Descent is a relatively complex boardgame, and shows off many of the advanced features of BattlePawn, including fully animated 3D graphics, sound and music, particle effects,
a flexible camera system built for top-down viewing, and so on.

The initial focus of BattlePawn will be on providing a solid multiplayer experience and quick development of new game titles. While there is no singleplayer support at launch, BattlePawn has been designed so that AI opponents can be added seamlessly to the engine at any point in the future without requiring a client-side patch.

The future of gaming appears to be in digital distribution, and BattlePawn has been designed to take advantage of this. None of our products are available in gaming stores and can only be downloaded and played online. You don't have to worry about losing or breaking your game CD's or keeping track of confusing game serials. You won't ever end up empty handed because BattlePawn is out of stock. If you have multiple computers (home and at work, for example), you can simply log in and play our games at any of these locations with just your username and password.

Over time the amount of games available through BattlePawn will continue to grow. Eventually we want to be the place to go in order to play online boardgames.
